Extended Epilogue

Bianca

“Alright, everything is ready to go,” I exclaimed proudly, hands on hips.

It was moving day. Finally. After being engaged for three months, I’d finally convinced Court to let me move in with him. Seriously, the guy was standing firm on his stance of letting me have time to experience things on my own. He’d only caved when I told him I was either moving in with him or I was crashing on Tasha and Lance’s couch until we got married.

“Should we call for a cab?”

“Not necessary,” he said as he leaned down and lifted the largest box. He stood and gave me a charming grin. “You’re going to carry my boxes all the way to your apartment?”

“Mm hmm. Be a peach and grab one will you? Leo and Donnie around? We could do this in one trip.”

I looked at him like he had grown a third eye. If he thought I was lugging a heavy box all the way across town, he was crazy. Loco.

Undeterred, Court called out from my bedroom doorway. “Hey Leo, Donnie – you guys around?”

My brothers responded from somewhere in the house and after a surprisingly short amount of time, considering they never came running this fast when I called, they stumbled into my room.

“Can you guys grab a box and help walk it over to my apartment.”

Obviously, they didn’t understand the insanity because without a word they moved toward the boxes and hefted them up and out of my room.

I threw my hands up at Court. “You cannot be serious? No way, I’m not doing it. I’ll be right here like a sane person waiting for a taxi.” I sat down on the bare mattress that would be left behind to use as a guest room, or more likely, taken over by one of the twins since they shared a room.

“Come on, princess. I’ll make it worth your while.” He winked and left me alone in the room with the last, and thankfully smallest, box.

“Ugh,” I groaned into the empty room knowing he’d won and I was going to have to trek across town with a cardboard box tucked under my arm. I allowed myself one last look around. The pink walls were bare, as were the dresser and closet. Everything that had made this room mine. I picked up the box and said a quiet goodbye to my room. I couldn’t feel too sad about leaving it behind when I was so excited about what was next for me and Court, waking up every morning with him beside me.

Donnie and Leo were already gone when I made it out of the house and into the chilly morning.

“At least I’ll work up a sweat so I won’t realize how unseasonably cool it is out here,” I grumbled.

Court just smiled at me and his happiness further grated. Maybe it wasn’t too late to move in with Tasha and Lance. Tasha would be nice enough to at least call a taxi to get me there.

I followed behind him, sulking. After the second block my arms were already tired, and I cursed myself that I’d put my purse in one of the boxes. I couldn’t even pay for my own cab.

Court stopped at the end of the block and waited for me to catch up.

“This is insanity. Can we please take a cab?” I asked and pushed my bottom lip out.

“Just a bit further.”

We crossed the street and I spotted Leo and Donnie walking back toward us, boxes mysteriously gone. Before I could wrap my brain around what was going on, Leo took my box with a wink and turned back the other way.

“I don’t understand.”

Court shifted his box to Donnie. “Thanks, man.”

My brothers left us at the corner and I watched as they walked up the sidewalk and into an apartment building I’d passed nearly every day of my life but never really looked at closely. It was striking with a brick front and white awning.

Court took my hand. “Come on.”

I smiled at him suspiciously but let him pull me into the building and through a lobby with white glossy floors. We passed the mail room and Court pressed the up arrow for the elevator.

“Is this some sort of trick?” I asked as we stepped into the elevator and it closed behind us. “Am I not really moving in with you? Did you do something crazy like buy me my own apartment because I meant what I said, I want to live with you. I don’t care about living on my own first or any of that, I –”

He silenced me with a kiss as the elevator ascended to the eighth floor.

The elevator dinged, and Court leaned down, taking my legs out from under me and lifting me without breaking the kiss in some sort of suave move that belonged in an Arnold movie when he finally killed the bad guys and won the girl. Maybe I’d let Court pick the film for movie night one too many times.

“8B,” he said as he carried me out of the elevator and stopped in front of an apartment door.

“Yes?” I asked, giddy with anticipation.

“No.” He shook his head and motioned toward the apartment. “8B.”

I looked to the apartment door and sure enough it was apartment 8B. “What is this?”

He wrestled the handle with his hand under my legs and pushed the door open. “Our new apartment.”

He carried me over the threshold and kissed my forehead before putting me down.

I looked around the space in awe. Higher ceilings than I would have guessed, hard wood floors. The setup was a lot like Court’s apartment, which I’d always loved.

“Thanks, guys.” Court spoke to my brothers as they grinned at me – always happy to be in on something secret Court was pulling without me knowing. “Pizza is on the way to the house.”

“Yeah,” they exclaimed excitedly and hurried out of the apartment.

“Thanks, Court,” Donnie called before the door shut behind them.

“You bribed my brothers with food?”

“Not bribery. Payment. They helped me get all my stuff in here too.”

“I don’t understand. What happened to your apartment?”

“It’s still there. I wanted us to be closer to your family. This place just came open and it seemed perfect. Look,” he dragged me behind him. “There’s even a decent sized patio space for you.”

“It’s great. Really. Thank you. I love that you wanted to be close to my family. You do realize my brothers are probably going to be over here eating our food and sleeping on our couch though, right?”

“I wouldn’t worry about that.”

He hurried off and I stared after him. Alarm bells ringing.

“Court.”

“Hmm…”

“What did you do?”

“How do you mean?”

“You know what I mean. What are you planning on doing with your apartment? I noticed we have all new furniture. Does that mean you left your apartment furnished?”

“Yeah, it was time for new stuff. We could go try out the new bed right now if you want. I believe I still need to make good on my promise to make it worth your while.”

“Courtney Adams you did not give my brothers a fully furnished shag pad?!”

He choked on his laughter. “A shag pad?”

“How are they going to be able to afford it? Don’t even tell me you’re paying for it or I’m going over there right now and kicking them out myself.”

“No, of course not. Look, I bought that apartment at the right time. Market was down, and housing was cheap. I’ve paid a good chunk off. They’re getting a good deal and I get to live here with you. Everybody wins.”

“My parents agreed to this?”

His grin was unbelievably cocky. “Your parents love me.”

I scoffed, but it was so totally true. Anything that Court thought was a good idea, they’d be on board.

“They’re not officially moving in until graduation. That was your parents’ compromise. Now, 8B, can we stop talking about your brothers? I don’t want to be thinking of those two while I’m trying to get you naked.”

“Mmm.”

He kissed my neck and I closed my eyes.

“You can’t call me 8B anymore.”

He stilled and stood upright. “Why not?”

“It’s too weird. Now it’d be like you were calling me the apartment. It’s bad enough you called me by a seat number for the first year of our relationship. I draw the line at being nicknamed after my apartment.”

“I wasn’t calling you a seat number because that’s all you were to me.”

“No matter how you spin it, you can’t do it now. It’s too weird.”

His face and tone were serious as he ran a hand through my hair. “I didn’t start calling you 8B because I thought of you as just a seat number. I called you that because it was something only we had. Fate or destiny or maybe just blind luck put me next to you that day and of all the people that could have occupied that seat it was you. My 8B.”

My heart melted in a pool at his feet, but I put up a playful front. “Fine, I’m going to start calling you 8C.”

“Nope, too late for that. Plus, it’s not as catchy.”

I threw my hands up in the air, but the smile on my face gave me away. As long as I could call him mine, I didn’t care about the rest.

“Come on 8B, I have a few apartment rules I want to discuss in great detail.” He grabbed my hand and pulled me toward the bedroom.

“Oh yeah?” I pressed my body against his and wrapped my arms around his neck.

“Rule one,” his voice came out raspy and deep as he leaned down, his lips a breath away from my neck. “You’re mine. Forever.”
